Red poppy on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large red poppy bloom with dark centre and soft petal edges sits on the inner forearm and wrist, with a slender green stem and closed bud running down towards the elbow. The shading blends from deep crimson to lighter red with wash-like gradients, giving a painted, watercolour effect. The design is set against plain skin and a grey fabric background, with the flower placed high on the wrist.

The last packet of poppy seed was split between my palms when the hydroponics alarm started its low, patient chime, and I had the sense not to drop it. Four hundred years of voyage had taught the Verdant Lark's crew one thing above the rest: anything that could be grown again was worth more than anything that could be mined. Bay Nine was failing. The grow-lights were dimming the way old lamps do, from the edges inward.

Ottilie had planted the first poppies in a tray labelled with her grandmother's name, because she said they were the only flower red enough to be seen through the dust of a dying sun. Nobody on the ship had ever seen a field of them. We had only the reconstructions on the library wall, bowls of colour bleeding into each other like spilled wine on paper. Ottilie used to say the petals looked wet even when they were dry.
I knelt at the tray where her seedlings had been, moved the dead stalks aside, and pressed the seed into the grey medium with my thumb. The first green stalk, when it came, was always a shade too pale. Only later did the colour climb up into the bloom, dark at the heart, then flaring at the edges like something the light had soaked into.
The alarm stopped. I sat back on my heels and waited, the way Ottilie taught me, and when the first bud split its green sheath I found I was crying, which in Bay Nine is allowed.
