Red poppy on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large red poppy bloom sits on the inner wrist and forearm, with a green bud and thin stem curving down towards the hand. The petals are shaded with soft, blended tones and dark centre detail, giving a watercolour-like finish. The red dominates the composition against the pale skin and a soft, blurred background.

You climb the fourteen flights again because the lift has been out since Tuesday, and by the ninth landing the stairs have stopped being an argument and become a fact. The envelope from the housing office is folded in your coat pocket beside the bus pass. Mrs Okonedo on the seventh is leaning on her door asking whether you've eaten, and you say yes because that is easier than the truth.

Your nan's seed packet has survived three house moves. It lives in the biscuit tin with the spare keys. Last March you scattered the seeds into a cracked pot on the balcony rail, more out of stubbornness than hope, and nothing came up but grit and one sulky dandelion. Then in June the wind off the ring road carried something up from the verge by the car park, and one morning there was a bud, green and tight, leaning out over the drop as if it had somewhere better to be.
By the time it opened, a notice had gone up in the lobby: balcony planters to be cleared by the end of the month for safety surveys. You stood reading it with the shopping bags creaking in your hands. Then you went up and looked. The bloom had unfolded overnight, paper-thin and so bright against the grey concrete that the pigeons on the parapet seemed to be keeping their distance out of respect.
You pick it at dawn before the surveyors arrive, snapping the stem low so the bud still clings to the bottom of it. You wrap the stalk in a damp tea towel and carry it down all fourteen flights, past Mrs Okonedo's closed door, out through the lobby where the notice flutters on its drawing pin. On the bus you wedge it upright in an empty jam jar on the seat beside you. The driver glances at it in the mirror, sees the petals still open in the window light, and says nothing at all.
