Poppy and buds on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic-looking tattoo of a red poppy in full bloom, with a dark centre, sits on a tall stem with two drooping red buds and a green bud near the base. Fine, shaded linework and soft gradients give the petals and leaves a painted, natural look, and the thin stem and root detail run down the forearm. Red and green ink dominate against a pale background that is kept plain, so the design sits as the single focus of the frame.

Your grandfather would have laughed at the state of the top field this morning, frost on every furrow and the far gate hanging off its bottom hinge again, so I gave up mending things before dinner and sat down at the kitchen table with the biscuit tin instead. The lid still smells of Brasso and his pipe, though he's been gone six years this March.

Inside are the seed heads he saved from the lane, dried to grey paper and rattling like dice when I tip them. Every June he walked the verge with a jam jar, knocking the heads over it and shaking out the dust like it was gold. He said poppy seed sleeps through the cold on purpose, that it needs a proper winter before it will think about waking. I used to tell him that was nonsense, and he used to say that was why I was the one who never got up before the hens.
I'm not asking you to come home for lambing, though the ewes would be glad of your hands. I'm asking you to take a pinch of these back to the flat with you, or better, to sow them along whatever scrap of earth you can get. Put them in root down and head up, the way he did, and don't expect anything before April. The little drooping buds are the ones to watch for, the ones that look like they've given up before they've started.
The tin is on the windowsill now with the lid off, so the frost can get at it properly. Mind the step on your way in when you come. It still lifts in the wet, and I haven't got round to it. Love, Nan.
