Red rose and black lace on the chest

Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large red rose with shaded petals sits at the centre, framed below by black lace motifs with fine chains and red droplet shapes hanging from them. The rose is shaded with soft gradients and dark lines, while the lace is drawn in crisp black linework. Red ink dominates the composition against pale skin, with the design sitting on the upper chest.

The lace came up from the bottom drawer of Room Six on a wet Tuesday in September, wrapped in tissue gone the colour of weak tea. Mrs Pellow, who kept the boarding house on Marrow Terrace and had never let a room stand empty in eleven years, held it up to the window as though it might tell her something. It was black as a coal-shed door, scalloped and looped like a pier railing, with a fine chain running through every point. From each hung a drop of red sealing wax, no bigger than a barley grain.

'The rose was my husband's idea,' she said, and set down a flat pressed bloom at the centre, brown at the edges and still faintly sweet. 'He wrote to me every fortnight from the Baltic boats. Every letter had a seal. When the letters stopped I cut the seals off and sewed them on, one for each month he was gone.' She counted them with a fingernail. 'Eleven. The rose is the one that came home with him.'

I asked her about the gap. There was a bare link at the lowest point of the swag, just left of centre, where the chain hung loose. She said he had never sent a seal for December, the month his boat was reported lost, so she had left that place empty and pinned the rose over it so the eye would not go looking.

That night I hung the lace from the brass bedpost in Room Six with the bare link turned towards the window, so that anyone climbing Marrow Terrace in the dark would see it before they saw the house.
