Come nearer, children, and mind the lamp, it spits when the air is thin. You have all seen the rose on the wall of the hydroponics bay, the one the old gardener Ysolde kept alive through the long dark between Carrow and Halden. What you have not been told is why she grew it inside a triangle of green-painted steel instead of in a proper bed.

The triangle was the ship's first warning. When the drift beacons went quiet, the crew bolted three struts together in the shape of a sharp little arrow and hung it over the galley hatch, so that anyone coming through would know which way the true sky lay. Ysolde saw that and thought it looked like a grave marker. So she took cuttings of a red climbing rose from the old seed bank, pressed them against the steel, and sat with them every night for eleven months while the ventilators hummed their one flat note.

On the night the second drive failed, the rose opened. Only one petal, a dark red curl no bigger than a thumbnail, but the whole galley turned to look at it, because nothing else on that ship had bloomed since launch. The captain wept, I am told, and then he laughed, and then he ordered the lights dimmed so the bloom could be seen by the sensors on the outer hull, which were never meant to see anything at all.

They found us the next morning. That is the whole of it, and the rose is still there, though the steel has rusted to the colour of old blood.
