Before and after: black rose cover-up on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The left panel shows a small, simple dark tattoo of an anchor-like symbol on the inner wrist, with bold solid linework and no shading. The right panel shows a large rose with heavy black shading and pink highlights, surrounded by teal-green leaves and buds that cover the earlier design. The image is a two-panel before and after comparison on a plain background, with a gloved hand holding the arm in each shot.

Ray had the anchor done the summer before he left Grimsby, a small blunt thing on the inside of his wrist, drawn so he would always know which way was home. By the time we reached the Mojave road in his brother's Corsair, the ink had gone soft at the edges and the sea was four hundred miles behind us, a rumour in the rear-view mirror.

We stopped at a petrol station with one pump working and a tattoo parlour bolted onto the side like an afterthought. The woman who ran it, Hettie Coyle, had forearms covered in swallows and a voice like gravel in a tin. She turned Ray's wrist to the strip light, looked at the anchor for a long moment, and said the sea wouldn't mind being forgotten, but the wrist would.
She didn't cover it straight away. She drew first, a rose with black petals packed tight, and leaves in a teal she mixed from a bottle of copper she kept under the counter. Ray gripped my hand so hard my knuckles cracked. When she finished, the anchor had vanished somewhere under all that dark petal and green.
He walked out into the glare with his sleeve pushed up, the rose climbing towards his elbow. He didn't look back toward the coast once. He didn't need to. The leaves were the colour of the water, and that was close enough for a man who had run out of road.
