Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of an upper thigh shows a cluster of three black ink roses with curling stems and leaves. The linework is bold and the petals are partly shaded with grey, with the tattoo sitting centrally on the outer thigh. The background is a dark red skirt being lifted at the hip, with skin tones and soft natural light.

The mule would not take the lower path, so Marta cut her own through the scree, and by noon the wind had swung north and taken her hat over the edge. She did not go after it. Her grandmother had said the pass at Kestrel Col gave back what it was owed and kept only what was offered, and a hat was not an offering.

At the saddle stood three rose bushes that no one had planted, black-stemmed and thorned, their flowers so dark they looked cut from slate. The shepherds called them the Col Sisters. You could take one if you had a debt to pay the mountain, but only one, and you had to leave a leaf on the stone with your name scratched into it.
Marta had a debt. Her brother Tomas had gone over the ridge in February with the flock and not come down. She knelt, pressed her thumb against a thorn until the blood beaded, and took the middle bloom. Its petals were grey at the edges, as though shadow had settled into them. She scratched his name into a leaf and laid it under the stone.
The wind dropped. Far below, a dog began barking, and then a man's voice called her name from the lower track. Tomas came up the switchbacks leading the mule, thinner and sunburnt, her lost hat tied to his head with string. He said the snow had buried him in a hollow for six weeks and that he had dreamed only of roses. She did not ask what the mountain had taken from him. She took the hat back, gave him the stem to hold, and they went down together without looking at the saddle again.
