Rose and heart with thorned vine
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A red rose with a spiral centre sits above a red heart outlined in black. Green leaves and thorned stems wrap around the heart and extend to the left and right. The bold black outlines and flat red and green fills give the design a crisp, graphic finish on a plain white background.

You are still counting pennies out of the biscuit tin when Mr Ossory comes up the caravan steps with the letter from the council, and you already know the shape of it from the way he holds it away from his coat. Forty years the Ossory Brothers have pitched on the Ferrybridge common. Now there is a fence going up, and the trestle tables are stacked under a tarpaulin that smells of diesel and wet sawdust.

The emblem was your mother's idea. She painted it on the big top's flags in the summer you turned nine: a red rose with a spiral at its heart, sitting on a heart drawn in heavy black, with green vine twisting up from the point and thorns sharp enough to make every child in the front row lean back. Nobody asked why a circus needed thorns. She said audiences trust a thing that bleeds a little.
On the last Saturday you take the green rope down from the high trapeze rigging, the one that has held Ossory flyers since before the war, and tie it between the two sycamores by the gate. Nobody buys tickets. Mr Ossory sits on an upturned bucket and claps slowly for the children who wander in from the estate, and you walk the rope in your boots with your arms out, the vine snagging your sleeve at every step.
At the end you unpin the rose flag from the central pole and fold it into quarters, heart outward, so the spiral is hidden. It is the last thing you do before the lorries leave for Doncaster, and it is the only thing you keep.
