Redrum lettering on the lower abdomen
Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows the word REDRUM written in red capital letters across the skin of the lower abdomen. The letters have a fine, even monoline outline with solid red fill, and the word is set in a plain sans-serif style. The image is cropped tightly, with a light blue fabric featuring pink and purple floral shapes filling the lower part of the frame.

Tuesday. Drizzle. Mrs Vera Stott on Harbour Row wants her name across the shop window in red, lettered on the inside of the glass so it reads true from the pavement. Mr Hale always said that's the whole trade in a sentence: you paint the wrong way round so the world can read it the right way. I've been doing it thirty years and still have to sit on the step and say the letters backwards to myself before I pick up the brush.

Kit, my apprentice, has a head for sums and none for mirrors. He held the hand glass at the back of the shop while I laid in the strokes, then went quiet in the way boys do when they've spotted something they'd rather not have spotted. "Miss, it spells a word the other road," he said. I told him every word spells something the other road if you stand in the wrong place, and to hold the glass steady. He sounded it out anyway, slowly, one letter at a time, and Mrs Stott laughed so hard she had to sit on a tin of plums.
We finished at four. The sign went up in the last of the light, red and even, the outlines crisp as a ruled line. From the street it read exactly as she'd asked. Kit stood on the far kerb with his hands in his pockets, squinting. "It looks right from out here," he said. "That's the trouble, isn't it." I didn't answer. I was already thinking about the jars of quince I'd promised to collect on Friday, and whether the paint would hold in the damp.
