Realistic black and grey shaded door panels with red REDRUM lettering across a limb in a close crop of a tattoo.

Redrum lettering over shaded doors

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a row of recessed door panels rendered in black and grey with soft shading and highlights to create depth. Across the centre, the red word REDRUM is written in plain capital letters, appearing reversed. The close crop fills the frame with the design, with the panels running above and below the lettering.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keepers of Halden ring walked the doors at dusk, nine hundred of them, because the ring turned and the doors did not. Maren Oske was nine when her grandmother handed her the lantern and the long brass ledger, and the first lesson was to read the panels as the glass showed them, since every door on the ring was built to be seen from the inside.

The ninth door was different. Its panels rose like steps, and across the middle a red word had been daubed that no one would say aloud. Read plainly it looked like nothing. Read in the glass it sat the right way round and meant the thing her grandmother called the shut word. 'That door keeps the cold store closed,' she said, 'and a shut thing wants no name. Walk past it and write nothing.'

Maren did not care for rules that had no reasons. One dusk, with the lantern guttering, she laid her palm on the ninth door and felt the cold come up through the panels like slow breath. The ledger had no column for breath. She copied the red word into it in full, forward, the way the ring was never meant to be read, and the page took the ink and held it.

Next morning the store stood open and the ring had stopped turning. Nobody had the words for what came out, so they called it the door's answer, and Maren took the lantern down to meet it with the ledger under her arm. Her grandmother's lesson came back to her at the top of the stair: a door is only ever as honest as the one reading it.
