Religious realism full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The sleeve shows praying hands, a bearded figure with a crown of thorns, a gothic cathedral facade, a winged angel and a rose window, with a veiled figure near the elbow. The work is rendered in fine, detailed shading with strong contrast and smooth tonal gradients. It is photographed from several angles on a black background, so the full sleeve is visible from wrist to shoulder.

Pull your chair nearer the range, and mind the cat, she has been sulking since Martinmas. The snow had lain three days on the Halsey lane when the mason's boy came up it with a lantern and no coat, asking for bread and a place in the barn. His name was Tobiah Renn, and he had walked out of Stanmoor, where the new cathedral was going up with its great rose window and not a single stone of it level.

Old Mother Halsey gave him the loft over the calves. In the mornings he sat on the bales with a chisel and a lump of grey stone, cutting a pair of praying hands, because his master had always said a window is only glass until someone prays through it. Tobiah did not believe that. He believed in wages, and the wages had stopped in October. So he carved for the farm instead, a wing for the gatepost, a face for the lintel, and each evening he watched the frost flower over the byre window in circles and points, and he tried to copy it in stone.
In February the thaw came, and with it the master, who had tracked his runaway up the valley. He saw the gatepost. He saw the frost-circle cut beside it. He said nothing for a long while, then asked who had taught the boy to see like that. Tobiah said the cold had. The master laughed, paid him double, and took him back to Stanmoor.
Now here is the part nobody believes. Every winter after, the frost on Halsey's byre window came in the same rose, and when the cathedral's window was finally glazed, it had the same thirty-two petals. Tobiah cut his name under the sill of the north door, small, where only a cold man would look. Go on, the stove is ticking. Look at your own glass in the morning and see if it isn't saying the same thing.
