Skulls and flowers full sleeve
Japanese · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Three photographs show a full sleeve tattoo covering the upper arm and forearm, dominated by two large realistic skulls with shaded bone detail. Lotus or peony style flowers, curling smoke or wave shapes and fine hatched linework fill the gaps around the skulls. The image uses only black and grey ink, with the three angled views placed side by side on a plain background.

The wagon smelled of linseed and wet canvas, and Mara had been told twice already to leave the brushes alone. Her uncle Tomasz was kneeling beside the big banner for the waltzers, a sheet of tarpaulin stretched between two trestles at the back of the field. He was working in grey only, because the black tins had gone on ahead with the lorry and the grey was all he had left.

"Smoke first," he said, without turning round. "Smoke goes under everything, or nothing sits right."
She watched him lay in long curling shapes that looked like breath off a kettle, then a wave breaking over a pale rock. Then came the lotus blooms, heavy-headed and opening in the corners, and between them two skulls. One grinned from the top of the sheet. The other lay lower, half-buried in the petals, as if it had lain down in the flowers to rest and forgotten to get up.
"Who are they for?" Mara asked.
"The ones who rode the wheel and didn't climb off," he said, and that was all he would say about it. He hatched the shadow under the bone with a brush so fine it seemed to be breathing, and the skulls began to look less like paint and more like something that had been waiting underneath the canvas all along.
Rain came in the night, the hard kind that rolls off the coast and drums on every caravan roof on the field. In the morning the smoke had run to nothing, and the wave had slumped into a grey puddle in the grass. But the skulls were still there on the tarpaulin, bright and clean where the paint had been thickest. Tomasz stood over them with his hands in his coat pockets and said nothing at all, and when the gates opened and the waltzers began to turn, Mara could see the wheel's lights reflected in the wet bone.
