Retro rocket with stars flash design

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black outline drawing of a retro rocket angled diagonally, with a round porthole, three small circular windows, a pointed nose cone topped by a ball, and a flame trail at the base. Four-pointed stars and small dots surround the rocket. The linework is solid and uniform, with black fill on the fins and exhaust, set against a plain beige background.

Dennis Vosper was nine the summer the Lyons boy painted a rocket on the side of the bathhouse, fins like a pair of black wings, a little ball on the top of its nose like the knob on a walking stick. Dennis thought it was the finest thing ever put on brick. He used to lie on the shingle at low tide with his chin on his fists, counting the four-pointed stars the Lyons boy had scattered round it, swearing he could hear the flame going.

The bathhouse came down in the gale of fifty-three, and the rocket with it, but Dennis kept the one bit that survived: a round porthole off an old tin lamp, painted over in black. He carried it in his coat pocket for the rest of his life, and when the boarding house was sold and the new owners asked what the thing was for, he told them it was for looking out of, when the sea got too loud to sleep.

That's the story, and I'll be honest with you, I never found out whether the Lyons boy meant to fly anything but his own mouth. Pass me that biscuit tin, would you. The lid sticks.
