Floating astronaut with planets
Black and grey · Flash
A floating astronaut in a helmet with a visor showing stars, reaching out with one arm and raising the other above the head. Small and large moon-like spheres drift around the figure against a plain white background. The linework is dense and detailed, with hatching and stippling used for shading on the suit, boots and planets, all in black ink and greys.

The moon in the corner of the ballroom had been the wrong size since the refit, too close to the chandelier, and Mirela had stopped trying to explain it to the caretaker. She was up a stepladder with a tin of silver paint when Teodor came through the service door with two mugs of tea balanced on a tea towel, the way he always carried things he didn't trust himself to hold properly.

"Harbour Authority wants the old orrery back," he said. "They've sent a man in a van. He asked if the planets were load-bearing."
"Tell him Saturn is. Saturn has been holding up the ceiling since 1962." She dabbed at a crack in the ring with her little brush, then climbed down and took the tea, and they stood together looking at the floor, where a dozen loose spheres had drifted into the corners over the winter. Nobody swept them. They rolled a little when the heating ticked on.
The last dance of the season was at eleven. Teodor had chalked a line from the bandstand to the far doors, the way his father had, and the old regulars were already drifting in with their good shoes in carrier bags. Mirela put the paint away. She had one more thing to fix before the band tuned up, and it was the astronaut on the back wall, who had been reaching for the chalk line for forty years and never once managed to step on it.
She lifted him down from his nail. He was lighter than she remembered, and his visor had caught the light of the bulbs so that it looked, from the front, like a window onto a clearer night. She set him on the parquet and gave him a gentle push. He turned slowly, one glove raised as if to catch a partner, and drifted across the line in a long unhurried curve, while the first waltz began and the little moons went spinning after him into the dark.
