Pine forest fading into a city street map on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo wraps around the arm and elbow, with a dense pine forest on the left that fades into stippled dots toward the centre. On the right, a detailed building with columns and windows sits above a white-lined grid that resembles a street map. The soft shading and grey tones are set against a plain indoor background with a vignetted edge.

Dear Tomasz,

The council men came up Clarendon Road again tonight with their lamps and clipboards, and they stood at the bottom of the hill counting the pines the way you'd count stolen spoons. I watched from the landing window. Forty-one trees since Tuesday, Mrs Okafor says, though she counts from the bakery and I count from here, so who is to say.

Let me tell you what the grid looks like from the top of the Mercer Street car park at two in the morning. The white lines are the old tram cuttings, the ones they filled in after the war, and the streets run out over them as if someone has pressed a flat hand onto wet paper. Where the lines are darkest, the trees have not yet been asked to leave. Where they go to dots, the ground is already letting go of its roots. I have started to think of the dots as the places where the forest is still making up its mind.

You asked whether the Ashdown building is still standing. It is. Its columns have been painted the colour of weak tea, and the clock above the door has stopped at twenty past eleven, which is when your father used to lock up the reading room. Nobody has fixed it. I think they are waiting to see how far the trees come down the hill before they decide the clock is worth the ladder.

Come home in the spring. Bring the compass with the cracked glass and we will walk the grid together and see which way the wood wants to go. I have left the back gate open, and the lamp is lit.

Love, Ruth
