Riddikulus lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand raised toward the camera, showing the word Riddikulus in fine black script lettering across the inner wrist and forearm. The lines are thin and even with a slight upward slant from left to right. The skin is pale and the background is dark and out of focus, so the lettering stands out clearly.

The truck's headlights have been dimming for forty miles, and the road ahead runs straight into a heat shimmer that looks like a lake and isn't. Somewhere under the dashboard the engine ticks like a clock nobody remembered to wind. You keep your eyes on the white line and try not to think about the figure you saw at the last petrol station, crouched beside the ice machine in your late aunt's green coat.

It steps onto the shoulder when you slow down. It has your aunt's face, then your father's, then a face you don't recognise at all, which is worse. Your hands go cold on the wheel. There is nobody out here to hear you, so you say the only useful thing a librarian in Swindon ever taught you, the word she made the whole Thursday group practise until it stuck. "Riddikulus," you croak, and it comes out smaller than you meant.
The figure hesitates. Then the green coat starts to fray at the hem and unravel into a tumbleweed, and the face goes soft and rubbery and pulls its mouth into a pout, like a child refused a biscuit. You laugh, a real laugh that hurts your ribs, and the tumbleweed bounces away across the lanes and is gone.
By the time the engine catches again, the road is empty except for one small tumbleweed rolling in your mirror, spinning after you like a dog that has decided you are its person. You drive on with the radio up, and every few miles you say the word again, just to check it still works.
