Tiny sun and crescent on the wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of an inner wrist and hand, with the wrist turned towards the camera. Two small black tattoos sit on the wrist: a star-like sun shape with short spikes on the upper left, and a thin open crescent lower down on the right. The linework is fine and unshaded, and the image is monochrome with a black leather-look strap on the wrist and dark polished nails on the fingers.

Mags had the galley to herself after the second sitting, which was when she liked it best. The night crossing from Harwick to the Skerry Isles took eleven hours, and for most of them the only sound was the engine coming up through the steel floor like a slow pulse. She scrubbed the tray with a wire pad and kept one eye on the porthole, where the sky had gone the colour of wet slate.

Her brother Dev had worked this run until March, when he left the boat after the business with the fuel invoices. He had left her his tin of spice blends and a habit of pinning notes to the fridge door. The last one, in his cramped capitals, said: CHECK THE CHART BEFORE YOU TRUST THE TIDES. She had found the chart in the wheelhouse drawer, and in the margin beside the Skerry Gap were two pencilled marks he had made years ago, a little starburst for daylight passages and a thin crescent for the dark ones. The crescent was pressed hard, as if he had gone over it more than once.

At four bells she climbed to the wheelhouse with a flask of tea. The mate was asleep in the chair, and the radar sweep threw a green line across the rocks. Mags unrolled the chart and traced the route with her finger, past the crescent and on towards the starburst, where the water would be shallow but clear. She set the flask down, took the pencil from behind the wheel, and drew a fresh sun at the point where the boat would turn, small and neat, so that whoever read the chart next would know the crossing had been made in daylight.
