Riot grrrl lettering across both thighs
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two thighs are shown, each with a black lettering tattoo: riot on the left and grrrl on the right, the final letter cropped at the edge of the frame. The letters use a bold, slightly irregular typewriter-style font with solid black fill and no shading. The ink is black against lightly tanned skin, with a striped skirt above and a dark floor below.

Mags had the Olivetti on her knees on the bus to Leeds, because the flat in Harehills had no table that didn't wobble. She trusted the letters more than anything else she owned. Every r needed a small kick of the carriage, and the ribbon came from a charity shop in Chapeltown that sold them off the reel for ten pence.

She typed on sheets of A4 cut to the width of a fanzine, then carried them to the print shop on Call Lane, where a man called Desmond ran a copier that smelled of burnt toast. He never asked what they were for. He charged her by the sheet and said the top corner was going black again, and she said that was the point, it was a rough edge.
The first run was forty copies. She stapled them on the kitchen floor with Rhiannon, who had dyed her fringe with a box of Crazy Color nicked from Boots, and they sat cross-legged until the staples ran out. Rhiannon wanted a title in big capitals. Mags wanted lowercase, the way the old zines from Bristol had them, letters that looked like they'd been struck rather than arranged.
Three weeks later a girl she had never met read one aloud on the number 56, moving her lips over the words, and then folded it small and tucked it into the back pocket of her jeans. Mags watched her get off at the stop by the launderette. The copy left behind on the seat was smudged where somebody's wet umbrella had leant against it, and the staples had already started to rust.
