Pizza infinity symbol on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo on the inner forearm forms an infinity symbol, with a pizza slice at its centre showing red pepperoni dots and yellow cheese dripping down the loops. The linework is thin and outlined in brown, with flat fills of yellow, orange and red and no shading. The subject sits centrally against a pale wall and plain skin, with the arm running diagonally across the frame.

You learned to make dough on the Mabel Ruth because the only flour aboard came in a sack from a man in Stourport. The oven had two settings, scorched and cold, and you spent your first winter learning which one to trust. By the third winter you could judge a base by the sound it made sliding off the peel.

Every Friday a boy from Hythe Lock came up the towpath with a coin and a shout, and every Friday you sent back a pizza folded in brown paper, the cheese already sliding out at the corners. Mr Okonedo at the lock-house claimed it tasted of canal water. You told him that was the pepperoni. He never once argued with the pepperoni.

The night the river came over the sluice, the barge swung on her mooring and every tin in the galley rolled to the port side. You stood in the hatch with a tray of dough in both hands and watched the brown water slide over the towpath. You thought, not for the first time, that the river goes round the same bends forever, the way a loop does, and the boat simply goes round with it.

By morning the flood had dropped. Okonedo came down the bank in his wellies, holding your empty brown paper out in front of him like a receipt. You took it, lit the oven, and it caught first time. You slid in the next one, red-dotted and dripping, and out on the water the current carried on under the hull the way it always does.
