The lift at Kestrel Court had been dead since Tuesday, so every stair on the fourteenth floor was carrying shopping, prams and bad news up and down. I had the spanner in one back pocket and my pencil behind my ear, which is how I know I am working. Before I touch any wall, I mark it. A small cross, drawn steady with the wrist and nothing else, so the drill goes exactly where the plug needs to go. My father taught me that in the days when a bad hook could bring a whole kitchen cabinet down on somebody's toes.

Mrs Adeyemi-Hart in flat 14C wanted three shelves for her cookery books and a rail for her husband's ties, which he had not worn since the spring. She stood in the doorway watching me with her arms folded, the way people do when they are deciding whether to trust the man with the pencil. I drew my crosses on the lime-washed plaster above the breakfast bar and she said nothing, which I took as a yes.

When I was done I stood back and noticed the wall was already full of them. Faint grey crosses under the paint, a dozen at least, some with the little pencilled arrows my father used to add when he was in a hurry. Every one was a place somebody had once decided a thing would hang for good. I had spent twenty years thinking they were just marks for the drill.

I left my cross in the corner, half-hidden behind the new shelf, and did not rub it out. Let whoever comes after me find it in the dark.
