Rose and beaded drop pendant design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a black linework drawing of a rose in full bloom, flanked by leaves and fine scrolling foliage. Strings of beads hang in drooping chains beneath, ending in a large faceted diamond-shaped pendant. The lines are dark and even with fine dotted detail in the beads, and the drawing sits on a soft purple-grey background with no colour ink.

The chandelier had not been lit since the funeral, and Mrs Ottoline Price kept the brass chain wound tight around its hook so that nobody would think to try it. Her nephew Edwin arrived on the Tuesday train with a case of pressed ferns and a letter from the solicitor, and he stood under the dark glass drops in the hall as though they might drop on him. She let him look. Beads of jet and crystal hung in long loops from the ceiling rose, and at the bottom of each swag a single faceted stone turned slowly in the draught from the door.

The roses were the difficulty. Her aunt had planted them along the south wall, a deep crimson climber that came up through the trellis every June, and the gardener had been paid to keep it off the gutters. Nobody had cut it back in a year. Edwin walked the path in his good shoes and came back with thorns in his cuff and a cutting he had taken without asking, its stem wrapped in damp newspaper.

"It will not root in this soil," Mrs Price said.

"Then I will take it to London," he said, and laid it on the hall table beside the solicitor's letter, where the lamp caught the leaves.

That night she unwound the chain, and the crystals swung into the dark and clicked against one another like a row of teeth. She sat beneath them until the candles guttered. By morning the rose on the table had opened a single pale petal, and she understood that he had been right to take it.
