Rose and blank banner flash design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a open rose bloom at the top, a stem with leaves on either side, and a wide ribbon banner across the middle with its ends curling. The design is rendered in plum outline and hatched shading on a cream fill, with a light beige border around the edge. The composition is centred and symmetrical, and the banner is left blank for lettering.

The rose by the lamp-room door flowered out of season that October, and Ada Pell cut the first bloom anyway, the way her husband had asked her to every autumn since the Mary Lee went down off the Skerrow reef. Tomas could not read, so he never wrote anything. Each night the boats were out, he tied a strip of bleached linen to the rose stem where the lamp could catch it, one strip for each hull that had sailed.

He called them his letters. Ada asked him once what they said, and he touched the strips and said they say come home, and that was all the reading the rock ever needed. A blank strip with the wind in it looked like nothing to a stranger, but the men who fished the Skerrow ground knew the rose meant the lamp, and the lamp meant the rock, and the rock meant hot bread and a dry bed.
The night the glass cracked, the wind took eleven of the strips off the stem in one hour. Tomas went out on the gallery with a lantern in his teeth and tied the last one with frozen fingers while the sea climbed the steps. At dawn the Mary Lee came round the point under a sky like wet slate, her crew steering for the one pale thing on the black rock, and they came in without a word between them.
Ada unpicked the surviving linen the following spring and found knots tied along each edge, a hundred small marks she could not read either. She asked the women of the village what they meant. Nobody knew, and it did not seem to matter. She hung the cloth from the rose again, and the rose flowered on the same day it always did.
