Mandala lotus with eye on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large lotus mandala with an eye at its centre covers the midriff, with the petals built from fine ornamental patterns. Fine linework and dense dotted shading create depth, and short chains with teardrop ends hang from the base of the design. The image is in black ink only, shown on bare skin above low-rise jeans against a soft brown backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Hanne Verity kept the bell at Saltwick harbour, and every spring the tide brought a lotus flower up the slipway, its petals folded tight as a fist and a single dark eye open at the centre. Nobody in Saltwick would touch it. The fishermen nailed a horseshoe above the bell-post and went out regardless, and the flower lay on the wet stones until the gulls grew bored of it.

Her grandson Tobias, nine years old and stubborn, picked it up anyway, because the eye had followed him all the way along the quay. He carried it home in a bucket of brine. That night the eye opened wider and the petals began to unfurl, each one stitched with patterns no net-mender in the town could name: knots that doubled back on themselves, spirals like sea-foam, little dotted hills of salt.

The flower wanted something in return. It asked for the bells of the Mermaid, the brass ones that had gone down with her in 1851, and it hung their chains from its base, each link ending in a drop of green glass. Every drop that fell rang once against the cobbles, and every ring was a name the sea had kept. Tobias learned to count them. He counted the nights his grandmother did not come up the stairs.

On the last night of the spring tide he rowed out with the flower in his lap and opened his hands over deep water. The eye closed slowly, like a man settling a debt, and the chains slid off into the dark. In the morning the bell rang once by itself, and Hanne came up the harbour road with kelp caught in her coat, asking who had been keeping the light.
