Rose and pocket watch on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded rose with leaves sits above a pocket watch with Roman numerals and a dotted chain running beneath it. The rose uses fine outlines with soft grey shading, while the watch has denser hatching and stippled detail on its case. Below, a small line drawing of a molecule and a partly visible insect-like shape extend the composition down the leg against a plain background of skin, a bench and a wooden floor.

The hall still smells of floor polish and warm squash, and Mr Hobbs is standing by the urn with a badge on his cardigan that reads Chemistry, as though nothing has moved on at all. He hands you a sticky label with your name on it. You peel it off, press it to your jumper, and look for the girl who used to sit beside you in the lab, the one who doodled tiny roses in the margins of every practical write-up.

You find Priya by the window, holding a paper plate of sausage rolls and laughing at something a man in a suit has just said. She has a watch on a worn leather strap and keeps tapping its face as if it runs slow. "Twenty years," she says, "and it still keeps better time than my husband." You tell her about the pocket watch in your gran's sideboard, silver gone dull, Roman numerals worn soft, a chain of dots that caught the light whenever you lifted it. It stopped at twenty to four the afternoon the results letters came, and you never wound it again.

She asks why you never fixed it. You say you were not sure you wanted to know what time it actually was. Then she taps the back of your hand and says the molecule you drew on every exercise book was serotonin, the one Hobbs made you memorise, and you laugh because you had forgotten it was ever a lesson. You thought it was just a flower with a sting in its tail. Hmm, no, you thought it was just a pattern you liked.

At half ten the car park is wet and the streetlights hum. You take the watch from your coat pocket, turn the crown until it catches, and hold it to your ear. The second hand moves, slow and certain, and for once you do not check what time it says.
