Rose and pocket watch on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose sits above an open pocket watch with Roman numerals and a chain, with a partial tattoo visible at the left edge of the frame. The rose and watch are rendered with fine shading and highlights that give them depth and a three-dimensional look. The image is almost entirely greyscale against a white tiled background.

Each morning he took it out, flicked the lid open with his thumbnail, and checked the Roman numerals as if the hands might have crept on while he slept.

His daughter Edie had found the rose in a florist's bucket on the Tuesday, a dark red thing already bruising at the edges. She set it in a jar on the sill of the workshop without asking, the way she used to bring him dandelions when she was small. Walter told her roses were for funerals and weddings, and she told him that was a poor excuse for a man who had spent forty years making things run on time.
On the Saturday he took the watch to the window, held it up to the grey light off the yard, and for the first time in three weeks he pressed the crown. The hands jumped, sluggish, then began their honest tick. He stood there a long while listening to it, the rose breathing its sweet rot beside him, and then he went to find his spectacles so he could read the time properly.
