Rose bud tattoo on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A closed rose bud is tattooed on the thigh, with a curling stem and green leaves extending down from its base. The bud is rendered in soft grey and brown shading with fine outlines that give it a realistic, dimensional look. The subject is cropped to the legs and hands against a plain blue-grey background, keeping the tattoo as the focal point.

Cook had told the boy twice that the rose would not open in salt air, and twice the boy went back to the rail to check. The Marigold was four weeks out from Bristol with a hold full of wool and one bud in a clay pot wedged behind the coal bin, wrapped in wet sacking. Nobody aboard had asked where it came from. The boy said a woman in Cardiff had given it to him for carrying a letter, and that was the end of it.

Every evening he fed it a spoon of the mutton fat water, which the cook swore was cruel and then did nothing to stop. The stem curled round the lip of the pot like a sleeping dog. Its leaves went dark green when the sea was calm and grey when it wasn't, and the bud sat closed in its brown coat through forty days of rain, and the men began to bet on it the way they bet on gulls.
On the forty-first morning the galley fire would not catch. The cook, out of temper, knocked the pot against the stove rail, and the bud split along one seam, just a crack, the colour of weak tea at its edges. Nobody cheered. The boy sat down on the coal bin and cried, and the cook, who had no children and no time for them, put a clean cloth over the pot and told him roses open when they are ready, not when boys are.
They made port at Lisbon with the bud still half shut. The boy kept it. It opened in a rented room on the Rua da Madalena a week later, all at once, the way the cook had said it would, and he never did learn who the letter had been for.
