Rose dreamcatcher tattoo design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing on white paper shows a shaded rose within a rope-edged dreamcatcher ring, with a ribbon and several feathers hanging below. A smaller dreamcatcher with a fine web and more feathers hangs from the lower ribbon. The shading is grey and brown, with soft tonal gradations on the petals and feathers and crisp outlines throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit yourself on the flour sacks, love, and mind the tray, the loaves are still deciding whether to rise. My grandfather hung a dreamcatcher over the proving cupboard the winter the mill shut, and he was never a man for ornament. He said the web was for the bad dreams that came down the flue from the valley. He wound the rope round the ring himself, then tied a rose into the middle, because a web on its own only catches things, and a thing that only catches gets tired.

Every night before the first oven was lit, he climbed the step stool and wiped the flour off the feathers with his thumb. The little web on the lower ribbon was for the small dreams, the ones about missing trains and borrowed coats, and he said those tangled in there and went quiet by morning. The long feathers were for the heavier sort, the kind a man carries about in his coat for years. He used to tell me the feathers were meant to be let go, same as the bread, and that the rose was so you remembered what you'd been holding when you let it go.
One January a lad came in before the light, hands red from the river, asking for a loaf he couldn't pay for. Grandad cut him the heel of the tin and then reached up and pulled one feather loose. The lad wouldn't take it. He said it was for keeping. Grandad only laughed and said keep it then, but mind the draught from the door, because it lifts everything off that hook once the shutters go up.
Listen. That's the shutter. Pass me the peel and watch the window go grey over the car park, and see how the feathers stir. Whatever they're carrying, it's going out the back with the cooling racks, and the first loaf is coming out with it.
