Rose, rosary and cross design
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A digital illustration showing a grey cross with a beaded rosary looped around it and a red rose with dew drops on its petals, supported by green leaves and a thorned stem. The cross and beads are rendered with smooth grey shading and highlights, while the rose and leaves use bold colour. Pale blue radiating lines fill the background behind the motif.

Now mind, I'm only telling you what my mother told me, and she had it from Ivy Penrose herself over the counter of the Co-op. Ivy kept her rosary on a nail by the back door, the silver beads gone dull as old pennies and the little cross at the end grey from years of her thumb. Every Sunday it went into her coat pocket, and every Sunday it came out again at the lychgate of St Michael's.

The autumn Walter Hesketh shipped out from Hull, Ivy went up the lane with that rosary in one fist and a pair of garden snips in the other. Against the churchyard wall a rose had grown wild for thirty years, red as a postbox, its stem shot through with thorns like barbed wire. She cut one bloom, the petals still beaded with the morning's rain, and wound the beads twice round the stalk so the cross hung down against the brick like a plumb line.
Walter came home in March with a bad chest and a paper bag of oranges, and the first thing he did was walk up the lane. The beads had rusted to the thorns and the rose had gone to a brown paper curl, but the cross still swung there in the wind. He stood a long while with his hat in his hands. Then he went home and told nobody anything, which was Walter all over.
My mother said the wall was still warm from the sun the afternoon they buried Ivy, and the beads still ran down the stone like a string of small moons.
