I have finally sorted the box from the potting shed, and you will not believe what was still in it. The old tin with the chipped lid, the one we filled with pressed petals behind the cricket pavilion the summer Mr Haskell caught us climbing the fence. Your handwriting is on the label: "Ours, don't touch." I laughed out loud in the kitchen.

We were fourteen and certain nothing we planted would ever die. We took cuttings from the rose bed by the chapel wall, wrapped them in wet newspaper and pushed them into the bank behind the pavilion where nobody would think to look. Five rooted. Four went black at the leaf edges the first winter, and by the time we left Ashcombe only the red one was still flowering, a stubborn crimson thing that hooked itself over the netting as if it had somewhere to be.

The reunion is on Saturday, in the same hall with the same sprung floor. I am bringing a jam jar with a cutting from that red bush, which I have been nursing on my windowsill since March. Tell me you will come, even if you only stand by the door and complain about the sausage rolls.
