Rose within nested geometric diamonds

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single rose with layered petals and two leaves sits at the centre of overlapping triangles and diamonds, drawn in fine outline and stippled dotwork shading. The design runs vertically down the limb, with the leaves extending to the lower right and a sheet of paper showing the matching stencil placed alongside. The image is shown in black ink and grey tones with no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Carraig Point had been dark since the storm, and Maeve Doolan rowed out to the drowned buoy with the lantern wedged between her knees. The sea was flat as pewter, which she did not trust. Her father had always said a calm sea was only a sea holding its breath.

She found the buoy tangled in a fishing net, and beneath it, caught on the iron ring, a brass sextant case with a rose pressed into its lid. The petals were layered like a pie crust, and a small diamond had been stamped inside a triangle beneath it, its points sharp enough to cut a thumb. Someone had made it with great care. Someone had also wanted it found by a person who knew how to read it.

She turned the case over. Three dots sat in the corner, the way her grandmother had marked the charts for the safe channels through the reef. Maeve set the oars and let the boat drift toward the headland, the rose case cold in her lap. By the time the first gull called from the cliffs, she had worked out the bearings and was steering for the gap in the rocks where no boat had dared in forty years. The lamp, she decided, could wait until she was home to light it.
