Roses and compass on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Three realistic roses and a compass dominate the outer thigh, with fine cursive script running down beside the flowers. The shading is smooth, with soft grey gradients on the petals and crisp dark linework on the compass face and needle. The tattoo fills the frame from top to bottom, and the skin tone and soft background keep the focus on the ink.

Dear Walter,

The ferry was late again, so I have been sitting on the harbour wall with your old compass in my lap, trying to work out which way Brighton lies from here. Mother says a compass left behind is bad luck, but you forgot it on the hall table in your hurry, and I have not had the heart to put it back in the drawer.
Mrs Pryce at the florist's has finally taken the roses out of the front window. Three crates came up from the glasshouses at Hove, pale and heavy-headed, and she kept back the best for the Ellis boy's wreath. I went round the back with a bucket and the shears and cut what was left over, and I have pressed two in the book beside the kitchen window. I thought you would want to know the cutting was done properly.
Father's ledger still has your name in the margin, against the wages you never collected. I have crossed nothing out. The clerk at the post office says letters from Malaya take five weeks now, so I will keep writing every Sunday and you may read them in whatever order the sea allows.
The needle swings and settles north no matter how I turn the glass. I have decided that is its only lesson, and I am taking it. Keep your head down and your bearings, and come home by the first boat.
Your sister, Ivy
