Roses and compass on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey realism tattoo of three roses and a compass sits on the outer thigh. Soft, detailed shading gives the petals depth, and fine script runs alongside the roses. Only the thigh and dark shorts are visible, set against a plain pale background.

You find the compass in the bottom of the trunk the morning of the wedding, wrapped in a tea towel that smells of pipe smoke. Your uncle Ned says it belonged to a surveyor who walked the moors for forty years and never once came home by the road he left by. He hands it over the way you'd pass a hot coal, quickly and with a warning.

At the reception in the tithe barn, the bride's brother asks you to dance, then asks where you're from, then gets lost on the way to the bar and comes back with two glasses of cider and a long story about a ram. You keep the compass open on the trestle table between the candles. Its needle will not settle north. It swings toward the door, then the window, then toward you, and stays there as if it has made up its mind.

Near midnight you step outside onto the gravel, and the needle drags you past the marquee, down the lane, through a gate with a broken latch, into a field where someone has laid three roses on a flat stone. The petals have gone brown at the edges. Nobody is there. Tucked under a stone is a card in a plastic sleeve: If you never get lost, then you never get found.

You stand there longer than you mean to. Then you turn back, the needle quiet now, pointing at the barn lights as plainly as a finger. Ned was right. Some roads you only learn by walking off them.
