You have been pruning the same rose for twenty minutes because your hands need something to do while the kettle takes its time. Grandad planted this bed the spring he came off the boats, and he never let anyone else touch the Albertines. The bush has outgrown the fence now and leans over the path as if it wants a word with the postman. Every cut you make smells green and sharp, which is the only thing about today that feels ordinary.

The watch sits on the potting bench where Maud left it, face up beside the brass compass, its glass fogged in one corner. It has been stopped at ten past four since the morning they found him in the greenhouse, and nobody has had the heart to wind it. Round the compass he wrapped a strip of tape, and on the tape, in careful capitals, he wrote KEEP THE WIND ON YOUR LEFT, a sailor's joke about getting home. For forty years you never knew which left he meant.

Maud comes out with two mugs and the solicitor's envelope under her arm, asking whether you have opened the watch case yet. You have not. Under the cracked crystal, folded small, is a slip of paper with a bearing written on it and a single word: Albertine. You carry the compass down the garden, past the sweet peas and the water butt, and stand where the needle tells you to. Beneath the oldest bush there is a tin box, and when you turn the compass in your palm, the needle swings slowly back towards the house.
