Roses, birdcage and bird on an arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo combines two large roses, an ornate birdcage with scrolled detailing and dangling beads, and a small bird perched on a leafy branch. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, building depth in the petals and the cage bars. The image is a triptych of three close-up panels, all in black and grey ink.

The canary had gone quiet by six, and Nell Dobson knew what that meant before the lamp man rapped on the back door. She lifted the wire cage from its hook by the scullery window, feeling the small weight of it shift, and carried it out past her mother's rose bushes into the cold yard where the pit wheel was still turning.

Her Tom was on the afternoon shift, down in the Hartley seam. Nobody in Ashgrove trusted the gas that crept along the roof after rain, and the birds had always been the first to say so. She set the cage on the low wall, pulled back the cloth, and watched the bird lie still on its perch, feathers puffed like a dropped glove. Her hands did not shake. They had learnt not to.

Up the lane the other women were gathering at the colliery gate with their shawls drawn tight. Mrs Pryce had brought the bread knife, as if that could help anyone. Nell did not join them. She opened the little door, lifted the canary onto her palm, and breathed gently across its breast the way her father had shown her when she was small, slow and steady, until the bird shivered and flexed one wing.

The whistle went at half past seven, long and flat. Nell kept breathing on the bird until the gate opened and the men came up in a grey line, faces black, eyes white in the dusk. Tom was the third one through. He saw the cage on the wall, the canary singing again on the branch beside her mother's roses, and he laughed, a sound like rain on tin. Nell laughed too, though she was the only one who knew how close the bird had come to the end of its song.
