Round glasses and lightning bolt tattoo

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of round-framed glasses with a lightning bolt between the lenses sits on smooth skin at the lower back. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no shading, and the design is centred in the frame against a blurred background.

Dear Hilda, the old man has finally let me grind the second lens myself, so you may tell Mother that her son is trusted with glass at last. Don't laugh. He stood behind me the whole morning with his arms folded, saying nothing, which is worse than shouting. The disc came from Alexandria, thick at the rim and clouded in the middle, and it took me four days of sand and water to get the curve he wanted.

You asked why the sign over the door shows a bolt painted between two round frames. Master Quintus says the bolt belongs to Jupiter, and that a lens able to gather sunlight can call fire down as surely as any god. I told him the cook's brazier does the same with a dented pan, and he threw a rag at me. The customers like the picture, though. A grain merchant from Ostia came in last week, pressed the frames to his nose, and read the tablet he had been squinting at for a year. He wept like a child and paid double.

I am keeping one pair for myself, the plain bronze ones with thin rims, because the letters on my wax tablets have started to swim. I have not told the old man. Last night I held a lens over the lamp to check its focus, and the flame jumped to the edge of the page, quick as a snake. I beat it out with my sleeve before Quintus woke, and burned a hole the size of a fig in my good tunic. Do not tell Mother that either.

Write back soon, and send the pumice stone if you can spare it. The bolt still has to be cut into the frame for the new sign, and I have promised to finish it before the Kalends. I will make it small enough that no one sees it unless they look.
