Old Mrs Tully kept the optician's cabinet above the chemist in Carrow Bridge, and every spectacle frame she ever mended was a round one, because the village believed a round lens was the only honest shape for seeing through. In the summer of 1954 a lightning storm split the oak outside the chapel, and the next morning Eli Harker came up the stairs with a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles wrapped in his mother's handkerchief. One arm was snapped clean, the other bent like a question.

She straightened the bridge with her thumbnail and asked him what he had been looking at when the sky came down. He said the sheep had scattered and he had gone up the hill to count them, which was true, but not the whole of it. He had been looking for his brother, who had gone off to the county school and had not written since Lent.

Mrs Tully said nothing for a while. Then she took a pot of red enamel from the drawer, the sort used for marking the good tools, and dabbed a small crooked bolt on the inside of the left lens. "So you can tell them apart," she said. "Lightning keeps the place it struck."

Eli walked home with the spectacles on his nose and the world sharp at the edges. Under the oak, the chapel wall was blackened and the ground was still warm. He wrote to his brother that night on the back of a feed bill, and signed it the way the village signed things it meant: always.
