Triangle, circle and line on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a small tattoo on the inner wrist, showing an upright triangle with a circle inside it and a single vertical line running from the apex to the base. The linework is crisp and even with solid black ink and no shading, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame against smooth skin.

The chart was wrong about the island, so at dusk I took three bearings from the taffrail and drew them on the back of a tide table. Marta, who had the steadier hand, ruled the lines with the brass straightedge until all three met in a neat little triangle, and the sea gave us nothing else to go on.

Inside the triangle we drew a circle, about the size of a rum cup set on the paper, because the old master always said a fix was only honest if it could be drawn around. Then Marta ran a single line from the top corner straight down to the base, through the centre, the way he had taught us to split a doubtful bearing in two. "That is north," she said. "Everything else is opinion."

We kept that tide table in the binnacle drawer for the rest of the voyage, and nobody touched it. Two weeks later we raised land exactly where the circle sat, a grey shoulder of rock with one white house on it. Marta swore the line had been pointing at it all along. I think the circle had done the real work, holding three lies still long enough for us to see they agreed on one small patch of water.
