Small fine-line black tattoo of a triangle with a circle and vertical line inside, on the back of a neck below the hairline.

Deathly Hallows triangle on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo of a triangle enclosing a circle, with a vertical line running from the apex through the centre. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits alone in the middle of a plain, pale patch of skin. The black and white photograph is taken from behind, with the hairline and shoulder edge framing the tattoo.

Hush now, and mind the lantern, because the tide is turning under the causeway and Old Maud never let a child cross it in the dark. Listen. The surveyors came to Saltmere the year the sea took the church spire, and their chief was a woman called Ines Varga, who carried a brass ring on a cord and a plumb line in a leather tube. She drew three marks on the cliff above the bay. A point, a ring, and a line hanging straight down from the point to the sand, the way a true thing hangs.

Every grandmother on the coast knew the drawing, though nobody had ever been let to read the survey. The point was the signal beacon at Gull Head. The ring was the cistern under the chapel, which held fresh water when the wells went brackish. The line was the sounding rope, dropped from the ring into the deep channel, and the men who measured it swore the channel was bottomless. That was nonsense, because the old people always said everything had a bottom if you were patient enough to find it.

When the storms came in the third winter, the beacon failed and the cistern froze, and the boats went out anyway on the strength of that drawing alone. Ines went out with them. Only the line came back, coiled in the bow, wet and perfectly straight. You can still see the mark on the cliff. Walk up at low water, put your back to the sea, and look where the point meets the ring. If you stand exactly there, the whole bay looks like it is waiting for you to come home.
