Route 66 hot rod and cards sleeve tattoo
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve of colour tattoos covers a limb against a teal and orange patterned background. Motifs include a Route 66 shield, a checkered flag, a hot rod with flames, playing cards, dice, an eight ball and a lighter, with a red heart-shaped engine piece at the top. The bold outlines and solid colour fills give a traditional look, and the designs are arranged to wrap around the limb.

Nobody in Holbrook thought Eddie Vance would finish the coupe. He'd dragged it out of a barn in February, bolted a red cast engine onto a frame with no floor, and talked to it every night like a horse he couldn't afford. By the time the first Route 66 shield came up over the ridge, the flames he'd painted down its flanks looked like they were licking the dust off the road.

The bet was struck in the back of the Blue Lantern on a Tuesday, over a felt table scarred by cigarettes, with a dented eight ball someone used as a paperweight. Eddie put the coupe against Lonnie Price's roadster and a sack of money neither man had bothered to count. Lonnie laid down an ace of spades. Eddie laid down a queen of hearts, rolled a pair of sixes, and grinned like he'd planned it all along.
The race ran from the grain elevator to the cattle guard at the county line and back, the checkered flag dropping from Sheriff Dunn's hand. I kept my eyes on the mirror and watched Lonnie's dust swallow the road. Past the second guard the red engine began to cough, and I thought of every cold night he'd spent under that hood, coaxing sparks back to life with a swear and a cigarette.
Eddie crossed second. Lonnie took the money, and Eddie took the flag, folding it into his back pocket. That night he lit a smoke with the chipped lighter, watched the coupe tick as it cooled in the lot, and said, "Next winter we build it a floor."
