Run Free script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a ponytail is photographed from behind, showing a small black script tattoo that reads Run Free on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The plain outdoor background of trees and a wooden railing keeps the focus on the tattoo at the left of the frame.

Dear Nell, the kettle has boiled twice while I sat here trying to find a way to start, so I'll just say it. Mabel went through the trap on Carver Road last Thursday and didn't stop until the far bend, and the steward, who has been timing dogs since before either of us was born, said he'd never seen a brindle move like that under the floodlights.

I'm writing from the flat above the chippy on Mill Street, where the buses sound like they're going through the bedroom. It's gone midnight. Down on the pavement a lad in a hi-vis jacket is hosing vinegar off the step, and every few minutes headlights from the bypass swing across the ceiling. Dad would have sat by the window with a roll-up and told me she was only warming up. He never once said she was finished. He said she was running free, as if the track was just the bit of the field where she happened to be standing.

The vet wants her off the track for good now. The knee has had enough, and I've told him she'll have a garden. Dad's garden, which is mostly nettles and the shed door hanging off one hinge. I don't know what a greyhound does in a garden. I suppose she'll lie on the path and watch the fence the way she used to watch the traps, as if the hare might still come round.

Come up at the weekend if you can. Bring the good tea. I'll take her round the rec at seven when it's empty, and you can stand at the gate with the spare lead and shout when I let go.

Love, Tom
