Fox rolling on its back on a thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a fox lying on its back with its legs in the air, drawn in orange, black and cream. Soft shading and blended tones give the fur a painterly, watercolour-like texture, and the cream tail fades lightly towards its tip. The design sits on the upper thigh of a person in denim shorts, with grass visible behind.

Mind the kettle, Mr Pryce, it spits. You asked about the fox, and I'll tell it the way my mother told it to me, which is the only honest way to tell a fox story. Sit down properly.

There was a red fox that lived in the marram grass above Cold Harbour, and every morning she came down the dune path to where the boarding house kitchen threw out its scraps. The gulls had the bones. The fox had the crusts. She was thin that winter and proud about it, and nobody on the cliff road had ever seen her lie down.
Then the spring the lighthouse keeper's boy went missing on the shingle, a fox was seen trotting ahead of the search party with his scarf in her teeth. Folk said she had hidden him in a hollow with the rabbits. They said a lot of things, and most of them were wrong. What is true is that when the boy came up the path at dusk, the fox was lying on her back in the sea-pinks, legs kicking at the sky, rolling like a pup, her tail spread across the sand like a bridal train, cream at the tips and flame at the root. The boy laughed so hard he forgot to be cold.
That is why, if you walk the dunes at evening, you will still see foxes roll in the grass before they go hunting, and why my mother never once let a child sit on that path without a crust in their pocket. Mind, Mr Pryce, your slippers are wet through. Off you go to bed.
