Running rabbit and clouds on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A rabbit mid-run faces right, drawn as an outline with its white body left open against the skin. Hatched lines and stippled clouds and grass trail behind it, with the shading built from dense crosshatching and fine strokes. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits across the upper arm, with a blurred dark sign visible behind it.

Nell Garside, who was nine and had no patience for grown people's stories, went up the lane with a jam jar and a lump of bread to see for herself. She found the grass along the wall cut in long stripes, as if something had raced through it and not stopped to look back, and at the top of the field the clouds had come down low and were lying in the bracken like sheep. She sat on the stile and waited. The hare did not come. What came instead was rain, sudden and sideways, and she ran home with the bread gone soft in her fist.

When the rain cleared the next morning, the grass along the wall was standing up again, every blade combed the same way, pointing east toward the town. Nell's father said the weather had got into the wool and that was all. Nell did not argue. She left the jam jar on the stile with the bread inside it, and by evening the bread was gone and the jar was full of clover.
