Leaping rabbit and clouds on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A rabbit mid-leap faces left with its ears back, trailing a line of motion into soft cloud shapes that continue across the skin. The linework is fine and even, with light hatching in the clouds and sky lines that add depth without shading. The design is in black ink only, set on the outer upper arm with a dark backdrop and part of a studio sign visible behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry was already rocking at the slipway when you found the gate open again, the goats loose on the road and your gran's shawl snagged on the wire where she had left it. You didn't stop to tie it. The rabbits had been running since noon, grey and brown across the machair, and you knew which way they were heading because everyone on Skerrow knew. They went to the western cliffs at the turn of the tide and leapt, and the mist off the sea took them.

Gran said they were not dying. She said the mist was too thick to be only weather, and that a rabbit with its ears laid flat over the drop was simply going somewhere the rest of us could not follow. You had laughed at her over tea that morning, the cups clinking in their saucers, and she had only pushed the sugar bowl across the oilcloth towards you.

Now you lay flat on the turf at the edge with the wind pressing your collar against your neck, watching. The first rabbit came low out of the grass, ears back, and went over the edge like a stone thrown uphill. Below, the sea was white with cloud. Then the cloud moved. It bunched and stretched and ran in long ribbons towards the lighthouse, and for a moment one soft shape held the exact line of a leaping hare.

You didn't jump. You put your palm on the turf and felt it still warm from the day. Behind you the goats were calling for their evening feed, and far out the ferry blew its horn twice, and you thought of the shawl still hanging on the gate, waiting for her to find it in the morning.
