Two profiles and a red rose on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black fine line tattoo shows two facing profiles, drawn as single unshaded contours with the features of one figure overlapping the other. A small red rose sits near the lower right edge of the design, the only colour in the piece. The tattoo is photographed close up on the forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

You find the photo booth at the back of Hallam's chemist, the curtain still smelling of hair oil and the last customer's cigarette. The coins are already in the slot because Marjorie, who has run the counter since before the war, never lets a machine go empty. You sit on the cracked stool, knees against the curtain, and tell yourself it is only a dare from the girls at the telephone exchange.

Then Ruth is beside you, shoulder to shoulder in a space built for one, and the flash goes off before either of you has decided where to look. You do not look at the camera. You look at her profile, the line of her nose and the small hard set of her mouth, and you think that if you could draw her with one pen without lifting it, you would never need another picture of anyone.
The strip comes out four frames long, still damp at the edges. In the first two you are laughing. In the third you have turned toward her without deciding to, and in the fourth there is no gap left between your heads, the two outlines run together like wet ink. Ruth folds the strip in half and tucks it inside her glove.
Two weeks later the Carlisle train leaves at seven with her on it, and you stand on the platform holding a single red rose from the stall outside the Corn Exchange, its petals already bruised from your grip. You never give it to her. You press it into the back of the strip, and some mornings you still take it out to work out which of you turned first.
