Curled sleeping cat on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a cat curled up asleep, with its head tucked toward its tail, drawn in a single black outline. Fine hatched lines build up shading along the body, back and tail, with stripe-like marks on the tail. The design sits centrally on the forearm against plain pale skin, with a dark workstation surface behind it.

Hush now, and mind the stair, because the third step tells on you. Yes, that one. Right, we're up. Now look across the yard at the roof of the bakery on Tanner Street, where the flue breathes out warm air until four in the morning. That's where the ginger cat slept, the one the bakers called Mr Pell, though nobody had ever thought to ask him his opinion on it.

Every night he curled himself into a tight loop on the lead, nose tucked down beside the striped tail, so that from the street he looked like a loaf somebody had dropped and forgotten to collect. Old Mrs Okafor across the road swore she'd seen him fold himself small like a letter he wasn't ready to post. The night the trams stopped for the strike, a boy called Ruben came up the drainpipe with a torch clamped in his teeth, meaning to carry the cat home in his coat for his sister's birthday.

Ruben reached the lead and found Mr Pell asleep, and he could not do it. He sat beside him for an hour while the city hummed below and the gulls argued over the bins. When the bells of St Gabriel's struck four, the cat opened one eye, looked at the boy as if he were the one who had lost his way, and went back to sleep. Ruben came down the pipe with empty hands and told his sister the cat had flown off on the wind.

Some nights, if you stand on that corner long enough, you can make out the shape of him up there, a small curl of shadow against the chimney, still keeping the warm for whoever needs it.
