Nobody had told the ghost in the flat above the chip shop in Margate that haunting was supposed to be frightening. He had been sent in 1987 with a clipboard, a sack of chains he never used, and a vague instruction to unsettle the tenants. Instead he sat on the windowsill every evening and watched the moon slide behind the cloud bank over the harbour, and he felt, quite plainly, sad.

The tenant, a night-shift nurse called Maureen Dacre, found him there one February and didn't scream. She put the kettle on, set out two mugs, and asked why he looked so glum. He told her about the Sad Ghost Club, which had three members and a laurel wreath pinned to the noticeboard at the cemetery gates, and how none of them had ever been invited to a proper party. She said that sounded like a bloody awful club. He agreed.
Over the following winter she brought him sprigs of rosemary from the window box, and he drew her, in pencil on the back of a rent demand, a small crooked mountain with snow on its peak and a heart with the words still sad across it. She said it was the first honest thing anyone had drawn in that flat in years. He pinned it above the sink, where the steam could curl around it.
When the council finally sold the building, Maureen moved to a bungalow in Ramsgate and left him the windowsill. On the last night he watched her walk under the street lamp with a folded drawing in her coat pocket, and when she reached the corner she turned and lifted one hand, and he saw she had written something on the back of it in her round, careful hand: stay nice.
