Ghost with ride or die script
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a ghost with two solid dot eyes, with the words ride or die written in a flowing script beneath its sheet-like hem. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on a light grey skin tone. The two side by side photographs show the same tattoo from slightly different angles, centred on the design.

Dear Ruth,

Don't tell the others, but I went down to the lay-by on the Ashcombe road again last night to see whether the lorry driver with the stuffed collie was still parked there. He wasn't. Just a crisp packet dancing round the bin and a moth the size of a biscuit. I waited anyway. You always said haunting is mostly waiting with good posture, and I have never once had good posture, so I sat on the verge with my hem tucked under my knees like a nun on a bench.
I know what you'll say. Leave the lay-by, go and frighten a proper dentist. But when the fog came up off the cutting at two, I thought of the summer you stood in the middle of the road in your nightie to stop that van ploughing into the sheep. You wrote RIDE OR DIE across my hem in biro that year, remember, and I've never once let it wash out. Somebody has to stay where the bad bends are.
Then the headlights came round slow and yellow, and a small car pulled in with its hazards going. A girl climbed out with a torch and a flask. She looked straight at me. Not through me, at me. She said, "Hello, you look knackered," poured tea into the cup lid and set it on the bonnet for me, and nobody has ever done that for a ghost in my whole life.
I'm writing this on the back of the receipt she left under the cup. She's coming back on Thursday. Bring your own cup.
Yours, till the end of the road, Pearl
