Sailing ship and mandala on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour traditional tattoo covers the forearm, showing a black and grey sailing ship with furled sails and a red flag at the top. Below it sit a red flower, teal and red leaves, and a circular mandala-style rosette in purple, teal and orange. Bold black outlines and solid fills dominate, and the design is framed by the forearm's length against a grey pavement.

The mules would not take the ship over Halter Pass, so Tobiah Wren carried it himself, strapped to his back in a sailcloth sack with the red pennant tied to the masthead so it would not snap in the wind. He had built it in a rented room above a chandler's in Carrick Bay over three winters, one rib at a time, and he swore it had never been further from salt water than the length of a quay. I was the mule boy, sixteen and sulky, and I walked behind him counting the switchbacks because it was better than listening to him talk to the thing.

He spoke to it every dusk. He would sit on a flat stone with the model across his knees and run his thumb over the painted compass rose on the deck, the one with the purple and teal rings, as if he were checking the chart. When the snow came sideways at the saddle and the mules balked, he would not let me furl the little sails. "She has to see the weather coming," he said, and his beard was white with ice by then.
We lost two days in a hut with a broken door. On the third morning the sky opened, and he pressed the model into my arms. "Take her down to the cairn and set her facing the valley. Come back for her when the pass thaws, and bring me a proper hull next time." I did not understand until I was standing at the cairn with the wind pulling at my coat and the ship under my hand, its tiny sails black against the white.
In May I came back up alone. The cairn was there, and the ship was gone, but someone had tied a red pennant to the highest stone, and it was snapping hard in a wind I could not feel down in the hollow. Below it the whole valley lay green and open, the way a sea looks from the top of a mast.
