Sailing ship in a circle on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A three-masted sailing ship with furled and full sails sits on stylised waves inside a circular frame, with short horizontal dashes suggesting sky above. The ship is outlined in bold black linework, while the waves and sky use fine stippled and hatched shading. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and is centred on the forearm.

The rain had been coming sideways across the market since eight, and by ten the canvas over my trestle sagged like a wet sail. Nobody buys brass in weather like this. I had a box of sextants nobody wanted, a tin of old naval buttons, and a ship under a dust cloth that I wasn't going to sell, though I kept lifting the corner to check the sails hadn't gone soft.

Dad built it the winter before the yard shut. He'd bought the kit off a man in Chatham who swore it was a sister ship to something famous, and he spent three months gluing rigging under a magnifying lamp clamped to the kitchen table. Three masts, a little flag he painted red because the blue ran out. He never sailed further than Margate. He said the sea was something you looked at from a seawall with tea going cold in your hands, and that a picture of it was honest enough.
A lad stopped at the stall around noon, hood up, shoulders soaked dark. He didn't ask the price. He just looked at the ship for a long time, counting the lines on the sails with one finger in the air, and then he said his gran used to sing about a ship exactly like that, though she'd never seen the sea either.
I found myself lifting the cloth off the whole thing and setting it right at the front edge of the stall, where the rain couldn't quite reach. The waves Dad had shaded in grey rings looked almost like they were moving. The lad nodded, said thanks, and walked off into the wet with his hands in his pockets.
