Sailing ship with Sail On banner on upper back

Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

A three-masted sailing ship with full sails sits above waves and a banner reading SAIL ON, with a small heart beneath the lettering. Clouds and three birds fill the sky, and bold black outlines frame the ship. Grey shading gives the sails volume, while red rays, a yellow hull and green banner ends add colour against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barque came into Skerrow Bay on a red-streaked evening, her three masts still full of wind, and by the time the light went you had already rowed out with a basket of bread for her cook. Nobody on the island knew her name yet, so you read it yourself from the stern board: Marigold Pell, Bristol. The mate leaned over the rail and asked whether any Skerrow boy could pilot them through the Teeth, and you told him the Teeth were no trouble to a girl born with a net in her hands.

Her captain, a thin man called Abel Tromp, kept you aboard two nights while the weather turned. He had a habit of drawing ships on the backs of charts, always with the sails filled out like lungs. On the second morning he gave you one of them and said a sailor's only true rule was to keep moving whatever the sea did. You told him that was a poor rule for a fisherman's daughter, since fishermen spent half their lives waiting for the tide to change its mind.

When the Marigold Pell finally cleared the point, the sun came up behind her and laid red rays across the water like the spokes of a wheel. Men on the quay raised their caps. Abel was the last to wave, and he called something across the widening gap that the wind tore to pieces. You caught only the end of it, the two words painted on the lifebuoy he had thrown ashore for you to keep.

You still have that buoy. Every spring, when the Teeth run high and the boats stay tied, you hang it on the net loft door and do exactly what it says.
